  • Cold-hand study: People chose to repeat the longer, objectively worse, painful episode because it had a better “end” (less painful). This was a mistake for the experiencing self, but preferred by the remembering self.
  • Duration neglect and peak-end rule: These System 1 characteristics, embedded in memory, cause distorted retrospective evaluations of experiences and lives. We believe duration is important, but memory tells us it is not.
  • Tyranny of the remembering self: The remembering self ignores the reality that time is finite. This bias favors short, intense joys over long, moderate happiness, and makes us fear short intense pain more than long moderate pain. It also influences our choices (e.g., “you will regret it”) based on anticipated memory, not actual experience.
  • Policy implications: The question of which self matters more has profound implications for medicine and welfare. Should investments be based on fear of a condition (remembering self’s assessment) or actual experienced suffering (experiencing self’s data)? The complexity means no easy solution. The growing interest in including indices of suffering in national statistics reflects a move towards valuing experienced well-being.

Econs and Humans

  • Rationality as coherence: For economists, rationality means internal consistency of beliefs and preferences. Econs are rational by this definition; Humans, with their susceptibility to biases like priming, WYSIATI, narrow framing, inside view, and preference reversals, cannot be.
  • “Irrational” vs. “not well described by rational-agent model”: Kahneman objects to branding humans as “irrational.” Our research shows that Humans are simply not Econs; they often need help to make better decisions.
  • Libertarian paternalism: This approach, championed by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein in Nudge, allows the state and other institutions to “nudge” people towards decisions that serve their long-term interests without curtailing freedom.
    • Nudges work: Default options (e.g., automatic pension plan enrollment, organ donation opt-out) work because deviating from the default is an “act of commission” that requires more effort, responsibility, and carries higher regret.
    • Protection from exploitation: Humans, unlike Econs, need protection from firms that exploit their weaknesses (e.g., hiding important information in fine print). Nudge advocates for simpler, more transparent contracts.
    • Save More Tomorrow: A brilliant innovation that leverages psychological principles (avoiding immediate loss, converting losses to foregone gains, automaticity) to dramatically increase savings rates.

Libertarian paternalism is appealing across the political spectrum because it acknowledges human cognitive limitations while respecting freedom. The “Nudge Unit” in the UK is an example of applying behavioral science to public policy.

Two Systems

  • System 1 and System 2 as fictions: Kahneman reiterates that these are metaphors, useful for understanding automatic vs. effortful cognitive processes.
  • System 2 as our conscious self: It articulates judgments and choices but often rationalizes System 1’s ideas and feelings. It also acts as an essential monitor, preventing foolish impulses. Its abilities are limited; we don’t always think straight due to limited knowledge, not just incorrect intuitions.
  • System 1 as the origin of good and bad: While the source of many errors, System 1 is also the origin of most of what we do right. It maintains a rich model of the world, distinguishing normal from surprising events, generating causal interpretations, and holding a vast repertory of acquired skills.
  • Skill vs. Heuristics: Skilled responses are automatic and accurate, developed in regular environments with clear feedback. When skill is absent, System 1 employs heuristics, substituting easier questions for harder ones. These heuristic answers are accessible and often approximately correct, but can be quite wrong.
  • Confidence as a System 1 feeling: System 1 registers cognitive ease but doesn’t signal unreliability. Intuitive answers feel quick and confident, regardless of whether they come from skill or heuristics. System 2 is lazy and struggles to distinguish between them, leading to errors like overconfidence and nonregressive predictions.
  • Improving judgments and decisions: Little can be achieved without considerable effort. System 1 is not easily educable. Improvement comes from:
    • Recognizing cognitive minefields: Slow down and engage System 2.
    • Learning from others’ mistakes: Observers are less cognitively busy and more open to information than actors. This is why the book is oriented to “critics and gossipers.”
    • Organizational improvements: Organizations can enforce orderly procedures (checklists, reference-class forecasting, premortem), encourage a culture of vigilance, and ensure constant quality control in decision-making processes.
    • Richer language: Using precise vocabulary (e.g., “anchoring effect,” “narrow framing”) helps identify and discuss biases, their causes, effects, and remedies.

The ultimate goal is to foster a culture where decision makers are more likely to imagine sophisticated and fair criticism, leading them to make better choices based on how a decision was made, not just its outcome. This requires a shift in how we think about our own minds and the minds of others.
